Introduction:
A while back I wrote an e-mail to Larry about the show,
other things and especially some things about Through a Lens
Darkly.
I wrote this poem before I ever saw this episode this is also
supposed
to be potential song lyrics hopefully someday. I have just this
year started
to try to work on my writing. I have always been a pretty
articulate person
verbally but I have always been afraid of writing and sweat blood
over every
word.
However I want you to know this was my very first effort and
it was a big
decision to put it on the internet where all those people can
read it, so
judge me gently. I really felt after seeing Through a Lens Darkly
(which by the way is my favorite episode) that it deals with a
lot of the
issues that Larry talked about in his newsgroup comments which
Mike posted
to the vidiot page about how Tom seemed to use his photography as
a way to
stay in observer mode a lot of the time in order to try and
protect himself
from being hurt. I feel that Tom was this way also because of his
experiences
with his Dad leaving, and that what he is going through now is
like deja vu of
losing his life with his Dad only his situation with THEM is so
much more
all emcompassing and this is why he feels the loss of all that is
close to him
even more. Well here is my poem.
Why do we let our hearts
Yet we ardently defend our right
To suffer our wounds without a fight
Holding at bay our urge for flight
When our souls encounter the darkest night
Why do we let our minds
Keep us from the love we might find
Knowing in our hearts
Love lies in dangerous parts
The moth who seeks the flame
Plays a sweet but deadly game
Instinct draws him near
Not emotion so he feels no fear
Surrounded he is doomed
By beauty he's consumed
So we ardently defend our right
To suffer our wounds without a fight
Passion not instinct leads us on
Through the pain that somehow makes us strong
Our wounded hearts as the crimson dawn
Venture into the light like a newborn fawn
As the healing rays cause the darkness to fade
Our courage grows from the journeys we've made
So we ardently defend our right
To suffer our wounds without a fight
Logic cannot always rule
Even though many may call us a fool
We know in our heart of hearts
That true love lies in dangerous parts
And when we let our hearts be brave
We may find love along the way
Not always love that means romance
But loyal friends we gain by chance
As we ardently defend our right
Throughout our lives for love to fight
We know no matter what the form
The loves we lose we'll always mourn
But let our wounded hearts believe
That though we for a time may grieve
The love we gave and we received
Will live as memories in our hearts
Of journeys made through dangerous parts
